Rehabilitate an abandoned, derelict hotel in the "skid row" area of downtown Los Angeles. Create 55 units of single room occupancy housing with related support and community spaces for some of the area's profoundly poor and homeless population, many of whom are veterans.
The original "E" configured floor plan of the three story brick building was abandoned and replaced with a new floor plan designed around one, large, interior courtyard that is open to the sky. All of the new units, as well as community kitchens and support spaces, focus into this unifying and light filled outdoor space. Each unit is designed with a private bathroom and a view to the courtyard. Year completed: 2000
